Despite popular myth, Bran Castle, commonly known as 'Dracula's Castle', was not built by Vlad Tepes, the count upon whom the novelist Bram Stoker is supposed to have based his vampire.


The secret stairway - not so secret anymore


The castle was built by the people of Brasov in 1382 to defend Bran mountain pass against Turks


Prejmer's 15th century peasant fortress - a church in the centre courtyard surrounded by citadel walls with small rooms


Its 272 small cells on four levels lining the inner citadel wall were intended to house the local population during sieges, each number representing one family

Ceausescu's  Palace of the Parliament - the world's second largest building. One sixth of Bucharest - including 12 churches, 3 monasteries, 2 synagogues and 7000 homes - were bulldozed to make room for this building
